Amazing. Only the NAIC would issue a press release concerning their problems with holding a meeting. What a bunch of self aborbed egotist. Somehow I think the people in New Orleans, the nation in general not to mention the insurance industry has other things on their minds.

What is there to think about with changing the location? New Orleans will not be getting back to anywhere near normal for the foreseeable future.

Some of us are scheduled to attend the AICP conference which was quickly moved from New Orleans to Dallas. Here’s their letter:

By now, most of you have seen or heard of the massive destruction and devastation hurricane Katrina left in its path. And although the storm has gone through the city of New Orleans, it is now being threatened by Katrina’s floodwaters. Our thoughts and prayers go to those who have been affected by this disaster, particularly to our AICP friends and members in Louisiana.

As we communicated to you via email yesterday afternoon, the Conference Planning Committee, in conjunction with the AICP Executive Committee, has been monitoring the situation in New Orleans. We have learned that the Hyatt Regency, the conference site in New Orleans, has sustained severe damage. Coupled with the overall damage the city of New Orleans has suffered, we have been forced to make significant changes with respect to the conference location.

We are pleased to advise you that conference will continue on the same dates, September 18 – 21, 2005, as previously scheduled, however, at a new location. Conference will be held in Dallas, Texas. We are currently negotiating the details with the new conference site and will release the name of the hotel to you within the next 24 hours. Once you receive this information, it will be necessary for you to rebook your hotel accommodations. To facilitate that, we are updating the online hotel registration functionality to reflect the new site. You will be notified when this is available.

Additionally, we urge you to make the required changes to your flight plans, i.e., from New Orleans to Dallas (DFW). Be sure to contact your travel agent to make your changes as soon as possible. It is our understanding that some airlines are waiving penalties for changes to flight reservations that are Katrina-related, and your travel agent should mention that when making the changes.

We do not anticipate any changes to the Conference schedule/Program at this time.

Thank you for your continued support of the AICP! We look forward to seeing you all in Dallas, Texas!

First, they are just trying to keep attendees informed. I believe that notice went up on Sunday even tho IJ did not pick it up until Wednesday.
Second, I doubt that you have ever tried to move a meeting of 3500 pp with over 30 breakout meeting rooms on short notice. Finding available space on same or close dates is not that easy.

No, it is certainly not easy to move an entire conference and AICP is to be commended for doing it so quickly. The fact they were able to keep the same dates is nothing short of amazing. However, when the NAIC used the word “possible changes” it’s almost as if they are hoping against hope that New Orleans will somehow be inhabitable in the next two weeks.

Does it seem strange to anyone else that two insurance organizations chose a city vulnerable to flooding during the height of the hurricane season?

And did you notice where the next NAIC meeting is located? Chicago in December…sort of begging for a snow storm.

Two would be more than enough. It would be easier to schedule w/o potentially putting people in harm’s way — which clearly a N.O. meeting at the height of hurricane season does.

No offense Reg View, but I wonder if the world would come to an end if you decided just to cancel this meeting? Somehow, I think the insurance industry would survive.

I hear the federal footsteps kicking down the door. I am not a big supporter of NAIC. But one benefit of the NAIC is to forstall federal regulation. If you want to opt for federal oversight it will save a lot of bureaucrats a lot of work trying to push a lumbering dinasor of state regs into the modern era. Of course, with federalization the benefit to the public or the economy is a topic of much debate.
