Before deciding on a method of finance everyone should check recent archives of the London Telegraph newspaper. Their costs are all out of line and the quality of care is way down. A recent lawsuit found in favor of a patient who was \”in line\” for an operation and went to France to have it done right away. The Britt plan had to pay the bill. The old standard way of holding costs down by rationing care is not being accepted anymore. I don\’t think it would be accepted at all in the U.S.

\”Congress passed the bill creating the Citizens\’ Health Care Working Group in late 2003. The same bill created a prescription drug benefit under Medicare.\”

And we ALL know how successful and easy to understand the Medicare prescription drug benefit plans were.

Yes, the UK was forced to reimburse the person for the operation done in France. It was an $8,000 procedure that would have cost $35,000 on the US. News also just came out that a 55 year old in London is healthier than a 55 year old in the US. We need to put the health back in health care and get the insurance out of it.

Kathi has it exactly right. The \”system\” we have now is so Byzantine that even experts can\’t work their way through it.

I don\’t think my situation is unique. I can\’t make any life decisions – should I leave my job to start a business? will I be able to retire? – without considering the impact on health insurance.

We can do a lot better – and it\’s nuts that we don\’t.

Illegal aliens get free health care!

Why can\’t we figure out how to make sure all Americans can afford health insurance.

In the early 1990\’s, I worked with a single mother with a disabled son who was being paid less than $20,000 a year and could not afford to participate in our health plan at work. When she interviewed, the boss was very vague about how much she would be expected to contribute for the plan; he said \”it wasn\’t very much.\” She accepted the job and then found she could not afford to join the plan. She became very unpleasant and resentful about this and created an extremely hostile work environment as a result.
