I wonder how long it took Obviousman at AAAMichigan to come up with these recommendations? Not that we don\’t need reminders, but this is not necessarily new.
I actually struck a kid last year who was dressed as a black ghost, his dad became violent with me. The kid was in a lot of pain, but I wasnt backing down cause it wasnt my fault and I really let that kids dad have it.
David-I hate to be the devil\’s advocate here because I totally agree with you, but you are aware that so long as a pedestrian crosses the street, they ALWAYS have the \”right of way\” – whether you can see them or not. Think about it – there is no contest between a 2,000lb+ vehicle and a pedestrian. Until there are some changes in the laws, drivers will never get a break. As a matter of fact, dark clothes plus night time equals a recipe for disaster. My pet peeve is dark clothes at night, on a bike with no helmet nor are there any reflectors. Some people just don\’t get it. And they want to know why they get hurt!
Don\’t know that pedestrians \”always\” have the right of way, but you should see \’em scatter when they saunter across the street & you don\’t slow down. Pretty funny! If they don\’t like the way you drive, tell \’em to stay off the sidewalk.
Wondering whether the \”four times higher\” risk took into account the fact that there are a lot more kids, period, outside on Halloween night. Is it truly a fourfold risk _per child_, or is it simply that the number of children injured by cars is four times higher than on an average night? There\’s a significant difference here that the article didn\’t clarify.
David, I\’m stunned at your post. The idea that you hit a child with your car and injured a child to the point that \”the kid was in a lot of pain,\” and found the best use of your time in the minutes afterward was to yell at his father, is one of the most shocking things I\’ve read on a message board in a long time.
Yea, Incred, I knew I was out of line, but I was drinking and probably didnt make the best decision. I was in a hurry trying to make it home to watch the football game and was very angry that the kid was in my way. I was just looking for an apology from his father, thats all. We have all been there.
