\”Lazear said recently enacted Florida legislation aimed at reducing homeowners\’ rates by giving insurers access to cheaper, state-backed backup coverage will drive private insurers away, reducing competition. The plan charges artificially low rates, he said, meaning it will likely require a taxpayer bailout or large assessments on policy holders to cover the next big storm.\”
Again, why should the rest of the country bail out Florida politicians from the results of their bad decisions?

Linda was looking for me over on the Katrina/AdjusterJoe story…

I said I would let Donnie get the (stupid) last word. I can\’t go back on that now…

Glad to see everyone over here… Drinks are on me tonight… after dealing with Donnie and Joe, I am gonna need A LOT of drinks… and someone to drive me home.

Anyhow, maybe I should stick to the topic at hand? But, I have no comments on it- I just wanted to say hi! :)

    Happy Friday!

The majority of Floridian\’s do not live in \”ritzy houses on the beach\”. Those that do can AFFORD the cost of insurance. The rest of us hard working people are finding it very TOUGH to pay the prices the companies are charging. Yes, yes, yes I know the companies are there to make a profit and I don\’t have any problem with that. What I do have a problem is with this. I have lived in Florida for almost all my life. Eight years ago when I moved into a different house my windstorm premium was less than $800.00 a year. Last year my premium was $3,500. That does not take into account another $800 a year for HO ins that does not cover wind or flood and another $900 for flood.

Then there is the matter of companies not wanting to write any insurance here and pulling out.

Unfortunately for me and many other Floridian\’s my income is not going up as fast as my premiums are going up.

Florida is not a welfare state and we are not looking for \”handouts\” or a free ride, just a little relief on the rate increases.

I don\’t know what state you live in but please stay there.

    Linda,

    I agree with you.

My premium is not nearly as high as yours though. That got me to thinking… I am going next week to meet with my insurance agent to discuss my coverage. Are you the same Linda who posted on the site about Royal Palm? If so, I saw your post there.

I am also glad Jim helped us out so much on that thread.

One question for you… as you know I live in the Central Florida area… I am close to an enormous lake, but no other bodies of water are closer than 30 minutes. Do you live on the coast? I just wondered because my coverage seems to be enough but it\’s far less than yours, so I want to make sure I am not sorry in the end.

    Thanks :)

I was not the poster on the Royal Palm thread. I wish I had seen that one.

My only suggestion to you is go over your policies carefully. I had to switch HO policies this year and found out that back up of sewers and drains was not covered on their policy but could be bought for an additional premium of like $25.00 so I had it added. The only thing worse than having your s**t blown/flooded away is it coming back up into your house.

Rosie-I don\’t want to buy insurance on my home-maybe I can\’t afford it or maybe I\’d rather buy pot. Either way, if my home burns down would you mind paying to rebuild it? I\’d rather not pay for it myself-it\’s just inconvenient.

If people want to live next to the ocean in the middle of hurricane territory, they should probably buy wind & flood coverage. If they choose not to, they should be prepared to deal with an uncovered loss. Unless the rest of the country is invited to spend a week in their seaside home and enjoy the view I see no reason for the rest of us to reimburse those who see no reason to buy coverage. If you can\’t afford wind/flood coverage you probably shouldn\’t live in a wind/flood (hurricane) prone area.

This dose of rocket-science brought to you by Cut the Crap.

In addition to the high insurance rates we also pay the high gas prices. Granted I do not have a heating problem to face in the winter. I do however have teenage drivers on my policies and also pay very high rates for health insurance for my family.

I am not independently wealthy and insurance is my biggest nut to crack. I am so glad that you have more money than me. And, BTW this was not a state requested program but a national one to cover other things than just hurricanes. Perhaps they should include your heating costs as catastophic.

Linda, the point is that its always something somehere..heating up north, hurricanes in the south, Twister in the midwest and earthquakes out west. Each state needs to take car of themselves, since insurance is state regulated and quit asking for everyone else to bail them out. I feel your pain, but there is always someone worst off than you.

How many months out of the year are you paying the $300 for heating costs? Maybe 6? That is $1800.00. Sure I will trade my windstorm bill for your heating bill.

And to the other posters like cut the crap, not everyone lives on the ocean with views of the water. Take a look at a map to see how much of Florida is not on the water.

Maybe we should just put up a \”closed\” sign at the border of Florida and not let any more snowbirds in. Stay up north during your winters instead of invading our state and clogging the highways with your pour driving habits.

To answer your question, I skimmed the article. No, I didn\’t read it all… but I did come across this excerpt:

\”Lawmakers from other Gulf states, the Northeast, and elsewhere have also voiced support for such a national program, which would establish a backup for property insurance similar to a federal program set up for terrorism insurance after the Sept. 11 attacks.\” – article we are posting about

It clearly says the Northeast. Is everyone who lives in the Northeast on the coast? And I presume elsewhere means elsewhere. So it seems like it is not just coastal senators, as you stated. I do not have any further information that I can post in order to assist in this matter.

    Thank you

    Linda,

Sorry if you are not getting the sympathy that you feel you deserve. It would be a prefect world if we all paid $500 for all of our insurance needs, had gas/electric bills of $100 a month, didn’t have to pay any state income taxes, etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately that is not the case.

As a nation we have always come to the assistance of anyone in the event of a natural disaster and I assume we always will. But to ask the nation to subsidize your insurance premiums just because you feel you pay too much… I’m sorry, but I would have a real hard time supporting that.

I moved away from my beloved state of Florida in July 2006. One of the prevailing reasons was my rising insurance premiums. When I moved back to my hometown of Merritt Island in 2001 my total annual homeowner\’s premiums were about $800. The same coverage would have cost me over $3000 this year. Thanks to the Citizen\’s fiasco helping the millionaires in Boca Raton & West Palm Beach keep their insurance \”affordable\”, the average working stiff is now getting the screw. I spent 20 years in the Marines and have spent the past 8 years as an insurance professional. I transplanted myself in Las Vegas and my homeowner\’s insurance is now only about $300 per year.

Good question, however I do not have a good answer. I surmise it is because of the way the barber takes the razor to the head, leaving the dome with a pattern similar to the top of a jar. Leatherneck I can explain, that comes from the early Marines wearing a leather collar to prevent sword wounds in battle.

If a National Cat Program charges actuarially sound rates to the various states/localities, no subsidies will result, but neither will significant rate decreases. What FL officials driving this really want is a subsidized program, which is why they don\’t get much support from other states.

Florida legislators and the OIR think the problem is insurer and reinsurer profits, so they keep pushing the private market out of the state with government assessment programs masquerading as insurance. Unfortunately, FL residents will find out soon enough the difference between an actual transfer of hurricane risk and a system of post-event assessments.

For those comparing states, according to Property Insurance Report, Florida ranks 4th in the nation for average Homeowner insurance rates, behind Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. As a percent of median income, Florida is 5th, behind the states above plus Mississippi.

Next time there\’s a hurricane that goes thru Florida, let all have a beer or two (or twelve) so that we can rest-up for the next round of FL Bail-out Buffs.

She said \”I hope George treats Laura better. He says no to everything. He\’s probably had a headache for 6 years straight.\”

Not sure how that was interpreted as she is in favor of this idea. I personally think it was sarcasm on her part. But nowhere in that post did she say she was in favor of it. She is anti-Bush after all. I guess it is all about how you read between the lines. I guess that\’s what happens when you live in the United States of make believe. (I was going to post that in a nicer way, but what the heck… cut the crap was rude to me first).

I read a real good article that applies here. It said that subsidized insurance and catastrophe insurance just encourages dangerous behavior. If you have to assume the costs of your behavior and cannot look to others for help you will not be as likely to live in a dangerous way. I hear all your complaints but in this country you are free to live and work wherever you please. If you live in a dangerous, expensive area and cannot afford it-leave. I have read all of these postings and I feel so blessed. I live in Calif 250 miles from LA, 200 miles from SF and 100 miles from the coast. No earthquate danger, no flood or hurricanes, no tornadoes, lots of sunshine and 1 hour from Yosemite. I pay $1200/yr property taxes, $400.00 for property insurance, own my home outright in a nice neighborhood and cannot conceive of the problems you people have. If I had your problems I would move. Maybe that is why everyone moves east to west. Do not believe all you hear about Calif. This is truly paradise.

You\’re right, but I can understand why it\’s so hard for people who have lived there a long time. Homeowners insurance in general and hurricane risk in particular were dramatically under-priced until the mid-90\’s. Since then, companies have struggled toward rate adequacy at the same time hurricane activity increased and coastal population growth exploded (this impacts insurer capital and reinsurance costs). It\’s really not so much the LEVEL of hurricane rates as much as the CHANGE in rates that is causing hardship.

\”…the fund would cover all types of catastrophes in every region, such as earthquakes.\” What a joke… how do you explain to someone in Ohio that they\’ll have to subsidize property insurance for someone who choses to live below sea level in a hurricane prone area? Or the guy in the $130k home in Ohio who has to subsidize property insurance for the guy with the $1.5m beach-front estate? Ohio gets a +/- 3.0 earthquake every 10 years, a dozen or so minor tornadoes, remnants of a hurricane causing minor flooding every 40 years, no large scale wildfires in recent recorded history, etc. It\’s rediculous to suggest the country subsidize people who CHOOSE to live in high-risk areas. Its shocking to me that Republicans (who claim to represent personal responsibility and accountability) would play a wierd Robin Hood/Welfare/Redistribution of Wealth game with this issue.

It\’s only weird until you realize that the Republicans no longer stand for what they claim they stand for.

Empirical evidence shows that (as currently constituted) the Republican Party should be re-named the National Socialist Democratic Party.

Crist and other republicans who want us all to hold hands and share responsibility for homeowners with the greatest risk might be republicans, but only in regards to subject matters that do not effect their constituents (voters). It\’s all about the popularity contest; rates have to rise, if the gov doesn\’t dance to the tune the locals want to hear, he\’ll be hearing about the peach festival, as in impeachment festivities; even if he doesn\’t believe what he says, he has to sound like he believes it.

How many politicians are there left who actually stick to the convictions? How many wouldn\’t take the baby they\’re kissing and drop it in a well if it would guarantee another xxx amount of votes?

Most republicans aren\’t acting very conservative these days…don\’t even get me started on the rest. It\’s all about pointing fingers, blaming the others, and no taking responsibility. No wonder the same principle sounds great for transfer to insurability; I\’m not responsible for my risk, you should help me afford this.
