Dear IJ, if you continue to print articles that appeal to a very small percentage of your readers and don’t help them write business, you will lose readers and subsequently advertisers. I highly doubt you will be able to replace them with LGBT marketing. Just a thought.

I thought this was a great article.

Amica allowed my partner and I to be on the same auto policy. The savings was significant.

This type of benefit should be marketed to the LGBT community. I am sure there are many gay couples out there who do not realize that they can have one auto policy and greatly reduce their premiums.

Worthless? Maybe I missed something, but when an article points out statistics about the spending power, spending habits, and the amount of impact a segment of our population can have on our industry, I don’t find that to be worthless. I find that to be worthwhile. I have a feeling that Waste of Time has other issues.

What? Gays have suffered for a long time with no insurance? Who will stand for the transgendered? No one? How about straight cross-dressers? No plan for them? I pity the hermaphrodites, they stand alone…

Waste of Time is a closet gay. Probably a married man of 53, living in Zionsville IN with two kids and a wife. But he’s definitely gay.

I question the definition of “huge” related to the buying power ($800 Billion in 2008). Yes, this looks to be significant, but I understand that the gay population is somewhere between 4 – 10% of the total population.
What is the buying power of the other 90-96%?
And we all know that this is a controversial topic, so when any business seeks to focus on one side, they run the risk of losing business or facing boycotts from the other side.

A gay community is a dying market. If one invests his resources in such a community he might see some growth in the beginning because of novelty however in time it will crash and disapate.

I agree, these appear to be bogus numbers. One of the arguments for opposing legislation to reverse the IA Gay marriage ruling was the tourist money that would pour into the state due to Gays coming in to be married. It only sprinkled in at first and then died out as there are very few new IA licenses being issued for Gay marriage. You’re not going to get rich marketing insurance to GAYs unless you live in San Fran.

    Mary-

What a great line of reasoning- someone is critical of the gay lifestyle… therefore they must be gay!

That means white supremacists are really black, communists are really capitalists, etc… what nonsense!

Or…maybe if someone doesn’t like something it probably just means they don’t like it.

Any time a disenfranchised group begins to gain acceptance, there is inevitably some backlash. This article is very helpful to those of us in the industry, because it identifies a large niche market that can be quite profitable. Who would not want that kind of information? Those who have other issues.

It took several generations to progress to the point where we have an African-American president, and this still enrages a small minority who cling to bigotry. Hopefully it will take less time for gays to achieve full acceptance, with less bigoted backlash.

I disagree. The gay community is vastly growing. Since it is no longer such a taboo to be gay it will continue to grow. Any group will have a strong preference to a company that aupports and markets to them. And as article mentioned they have lots of spending power.

I’m not a bigot, and I don’t mind a black man being president, but I do think a man who is an idiot should not be president. Gay or not, there’s insurance out there, and everyone’s entitled to shopping for the best at the lowest price. Anyone who wants insurance from me will get fair treatment.

I think the article brought some interesting points to light. Your close-mindedness and primitive comment is offensive, but sadly, not uncommon. If you haven’t figured out how to write business on your own, perhaps you are in the wrong industry. I imagine a career requiring minimal to no human interaction is better suited to your “views”.

I think the nugget to be taken away from this story of an agent who couldn’t capitalize on his newly discovered affinity with the LGBT community lies in the comment by the marketer: this is a community that responds to TASTEFUL marketing, prefereably from someone who didn’t suddenly appear out of nowhere, claiming to have their newly profitable best interests at heart…

Have you heard the percentage of people getting divorced is going down? Yes, because less straight people are getting married. They are chosing to live together instead. Funny thing is, gays want to get married and the straights don’t. It’ll be a matter of time before the gays say, who was the idiot that pushed for this. Now we’re miserable too. LOL I know some women that hate equal rights for women. They want to stay home and not work. Well that all changed when the male workforce doubled because women entered it. Pay dropped as there were twice as many people fighting for the same jobs. Well, now it requires two family incomes in MOST cases to live. The gays should have thought this through. 100 years from now we’ll see if they still agree to marriage. LOL

Tolerance is a two-way street. You can’t just demand tolerance of those who disagree with you. You need to allow others to hold opposing viewpoints without stereotyping them and calling their views illegitimate.

Tolerance of evil is… well, evil. Profiting from evil is evil too. Profiting from the destruction of our society is evil. Condoning self-destructive behavior is evil.

I mean, other than the money, I don’t see the upside.

I merely point out a fact of marketing and now I am a bigot and closet gay! My point was this: Insurance Journal is a news source for the insurance industry that makes money on advertising. If you’re articles appeal only to a small percentage of your readers, your viewership will match the viewpoint. Advertisers, looking to reach agents who care about growing their businrss, not ideology, will look for larger audiences. Add an issue as explosive as gay marriage and wala – IJ is no longer a source for news. it’s a chat room for idealogues to bash each other.
