In the early 1970’s I owned an NSU Sport Prinz, a very small car that gave 40-50 mpg under normal circumstances. In a fuel economy contest I participated in it gave well over 90 mpg. The NSU like the silly Progressive contest cars did not meet DOT or EPA specs and could not legally be offered as a new car today. Weight is the enemy and as long as we have steel girders in the doors and swarms of airbags hidden in every noon and cranny fuel mileage will suffer- survivability in a crash is much better though. It’s a trade off.

Fuel economy is needed but we also need some beef (weight) to protect the people in the car. Compromise and give us a safe and economic vehicle. Maybe plug-ins or a different kind of fuel may be the answer. Keep working on it though.

When I ride my motorcycle I do so with the knowledge that if an SUV hits me, I’m toast. If I’m out in one of my old cars that don’t have airbags or side girders, the same SUV that killed me on by bike will kill me in my old car. Free men are free to risk their lives. I’m REALLY observant when I’m driving around.
