Teens may text while driving but those in my age group (mid 60’s)often just don’t pay any attention at all to their surroundings. When I catch myself not paying attention I actually make a note in my journal when I get home in order to make myself more aware. Drifting into another lane was one of my faults and I guarantee I don’t do that any more. Not noticing turn arrows was another fault that I have corrected. Lots of supplemental training to get my competition license back in the day and pursuit training for the police reserves taught me to sharpen my driving skills and to corrent my own errors.

Obtaining a driver’s license in the US is way easier than in Europe. Not only does it cost roughly $500-$1,000 to get a license in some European countries, but driving students must pass their test on a manual transmission and must do all the required tests, ie. parallel parking, backing out, highway driving, etc. It doesn’t matter if their car is automatic or if they never plan to parallel park. When I took my test as a 16 year old, I was told to drive down a residential street and back out of a drivway and that’s it. It took 10 minutes. People in the US have no concept of using the left lane on a highway for passing only. You will always see some buffoon driving 50 mph in the left lane. It’s amazing to observe how careless many drivers in the US are and I think it is because the driver’s test is so lax.

And that is the SAME test I had over 35 years ago! Glad to see that the US is keeping up with the times!
