Not to worry. Geightner and Bernanke will just crank out the money for FEMA. God forbid if a few of the several hundred other Federal programs that don’t work would suffer a cancellation or defunding so we can take care of this emergency.
Shame on Cantor and shame on you, longtime agent; these folks who were
hurt by Irene need help, not political games. Maybe we should take the
savings from Iraq or Afghanistan, or New Orleans flood control projects.
And shame on you Mark for your comment. FEMA has $972 million in their account to supposedly pay for Irene damage, primarily Flood. The Insurance Industry will take care of several billion from wind. Where do you think FEMA will get the funds to take care of all the claims they will have? Nobody said the folks hurt by Irene should not receive assistance. The question is where they get the money. Perhaps some of the social programs will have to suffer for a while until the fund can be replenished.
Better yet, fire a few thousand federal employees, who are primarily drains on the system, providing very little, if any, value. Perhaps we cut the budget of the president (save secret service – though that isn’t part of the presidential budget), and every single congressman and senator, too.
They should all take a pay cut, no travel allowance, decrease their staff and all their other benefits. We also have 189 departments, agencies, sub agencies, boards and useless programs to be cut. If there is anything left in the Stimulus Funds, transfer that to FEMA as well and maybe they could provide relief to the folks.
i don’t understand…the administration is just going to ignore the part of the bill they don’t like (offsetting additional funding in one place with decreased funding somewhere else)? Politics makes me want to pull my hair out.
Unfortunately this is what happens when the federal government tries to run insurance programs for which they have limited to no experience because of the short terms and lawyers-turned-politicians: federal crop insurance, federal flood insurance, social security….all flirting with insolvency. I predict that Irene and (hopefully not) Katia will push pressure through social policy for private insurers to cover flood in the future given the current deficit issues. I hope I am wrong!
