I own 2 of them and they are remarkable vehicles averaging nearly 50 miles/gallon. I am certainly glad to hear that they are stolen less frequently than other vehicles. However, I can’t help but wonder why??
They have smart key systems. Could that be one explanation? I wonder if the demographic of typical owners probably has some influence on this.
Majority of cars are stolen and go to a chop shop due to a lack of parts availibility. Prius is still too new to have depleted replacement parts.
Just a guess.
Besides, how would that look in the crow bar motel. I’m in for stealing a Prius vs I’m in for stealing a Jag.
I own a Volt, so that probably means there’s zero chance of it being stolen. It is a wonderful car, drives like a sports car. I only use gas maybe once every three months, so I’m averaging 235 mpg. Feels good to pass gas stations and not stop because I really don’t use the stuff hardly at all anymore. If more people drove cars like the Volt, we wouldn’t need Exxon and Chevron.
I bought a Prius in 2008 and it has been the best car that I have ever owned. Volts were not being marketed when I bought my Prius but, I would consider buying one the next time I need another car. I need to ask if you are concerned about the gas getting old and fouling up the charging motor. Do you on occassion purposely let the battery get low in order to use most of the old gas?
It depends on where you live. I live in Texas and most of our electricity comes from natural gas. We also have a nuclear plant in the area and I live about two miles from a hydro-electric generating dam. I read an article not long ago that natural gas is quickly replacing coal.
I am not surprised. I sure wouldn’t want one of the ugly things (Prius). I would attribute the high recovery rate to the thieves waking up in the morning wondering “what in the world was I thinking?”
The Prius’s (sp?) that I’ve been in are good city cars but for me they wouldn’t work very well. I like performance and comfort for those 700 mile days. At 33 mpg, my Audi is just fine by me.
I don’t eat Twinkees but I don’t like seeing 18,000 unemployed bakers.
The entire Prius family of vehicles is just plain ugly. I like cars — a lot — and for me the Prius is without a doubt the least desirable current-production vehicle on the road.
Why the high recovery rate? My guess is that the thieves wake up in the morning wondering “What was I thinking?” and give them back.
Correction! I cleaned out my glove compartment this weekend. The Prius manual is only about half an inch thick – smaller than the manual for my Mercury Villager.
Back to a previous comment about efficiency: cars are much less efficient than a utility company’s generators, whether coal or natural gas fired. So even though you are burning, say coal, to generate the electricity to power a car, you are putting many fewer emmissions into the atmosphere than your car would to go the same distance. This is still true with a great gas saver like the Prius, though much less so.
You know gasoline is still too cheap if people pick handsome fuel guzzlers over “ugly” sippers.
Unless a car thief is a tree-hugger, I don’t think they’ll be stealing a Prius any time soon.
Well, DUH! If I was going to steal a car, it sure as hell wouldn’t be a Prius!!
I am sure the recovery rate is high because even thieves can’t stand driving them.
I know right?! If I’m stealing a car, I want one that goes FAST!

Any ideas out there?

I’ve heard very negative comments about the Volt on IJ. This is the first positive thing I’ve heard. Keep in on the DL, lest your car gets stolen!

Just treat the gas when you fill the tank. I it is good for a year.
Except what about the people earn their living working for Exxon and Mobile?
Just a couple questions…
Do you ever drive more than 10 miles from home?
How’s your electric bill?
Why is a coal powered car better than a gas powered car? (Most electricity is produced by burning coal.)

Natural gas is still a fossil fuel with carbon emissions.
I agree but, natural gas certainly emits less carbon and other polluting elements than coal or gasoline.

Have you seen how thick an operators manual for a Prius is? I can see why thieves might just skip it.
Mine is no larger than the one for my Mercury Villager – about 3/4 inch thick.

SHHHHHH! Dont be giving them oil guys any ideas.
