It’s critical to the country’s economy when you spend more than the rest of the world combined on “defense”…

Admiral Mullen’s remarks will be part of a concerted and well orchestrated long-term effort to turn our ‘cyber’ capabilities into a branch of the military on the level of the Air Force or the Marines. They can’t do this without a fearful populace and a bogeyman or two. Their own stated goal is creation of a system whereby they have the capability to know who is doing what, where they are doing it from (physically- geolocation), how they are doing it and why.

The funny thing is, I wholeheartedly agree with Admiral Mullen, though not in the way he intends. Our nation’s financial health is indeed tied to our national security. We simply cannot afford to fund our global military effort. We simply cannot afford to outspend every other nation in the world, combined, on defense. We simply cannot continue to be the world’s police. We simply cannot continue to allow over a trillion dollars a year to go to pay for a defense that operates in the shadows in secret. And we definitely cannot afford, from a dollars or a freedom perspective, to hand totalitarian powers to the JCOS on a silver platter.
