“The experiences are wrenching, he said. And recipients invariably resent him, thinking he’s trying to put a price on the priceless things they’ve lost.”

Same thing an adjuster goes through every day, only on a larger scale.

Not a pleasant job, weighing the needs of the victims against the contraints of country with $17 trillion in debt and annual $1.2 trillion deficits.

I don’t want to sound cold and uncaring but how come after every tragedy there has to be some kind of monetary payout? I understand in the BP oil spill it was for lost work, businesses were affected. It seems that we have to pay someone everytime something happens to them. I understand this is a privately funded fund, and it will help some pay their medical bills who don’t have insurance, which is fair, but I just don’t understand paying for emotional distress. No amount of money will change the terror that these victims suffered.

The 9/11 situation was far worse. The Policemen & Firemen responders were covered by WC for injuries, deaths, Occ Disease etc, but the families were also rewarded with large settlements as well.
