The focus has been on driverless cars. But the real goal should be a crashless car. My Adaptive Cruise Control makes is almost impossible for me to hit car in front of me. With car-to-car communication, we could have virtual invisible pillows for all cars, and pedestrians and even animals that would essentially end collisions. Then use auto braking to make it impossible for the driver to lose control or drive off the roadway. The technology is available. Then the liability may shift to car manufacturer indirectly through the car owner, just like the liability of airplanes and roller coaster, which almost never crash.
I would say that if an accident results in a death due to autonomous driving flaw by the manufacturer, that it be their entire board of directors that would be charged with vehicular manslaughter. The reckless behavior of executives in other industries including automobiles needs to be addressed along with full accountability. If they know that they could go to prison their might be a more diligent approach rather than a fine which does nothing to hold those at the top accountable as they would continue to rake in exorbitant salaries. I understand the need for balance but their needs to be full accountability and someone would need togo to jail if that should occur.
Want a safe totally driverless auto? Take the Autotrain or the Chunnel.
