As a retired airline captain and author of SOAR, The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying I would like to point out (as I did on MSNBN the night of the crash) that this crash had nothing to do with automation. It was caused by an incompetent pilot on a “check ride” with an incompetent check pilot both of whom were employed by incompetent airline management. There is no excuse when a professional pilot cannot do what amateur pilots do every time they fly: conduct a visual approach and landing.
It is the pilot’s job to monitor speed and path to the runway. To blame automation is absurd. Try telling a policeman the you were driving 90 MPH because your cruise control malfunctioned but you didn’t notice it.
