The interns accepted the position with no pay correct? They didn’t have to take the job.

To Intern: You do realize this is an unpaid position you are accepting to give you experience in the real world.

Good decision — if a company is only going to allow the intern to do “grunt” work — then they should be paid. If the intern is doing something that allows the student to enhance their resume for after graduation, then the company can slide on paying (assumption being that the company is also using resources to train the student to do something more than fetch coffee and make copies).

Per my college program guidelines, the maximum hours set for our summer internships were 40-hours, and our temporary “boss” was supposed to schedule it accordingly.

My first internship my freshman year surpassed that max within the first 4 days of week one, and went on for approximately another 80-100 hours per week for around three-months. I just turned 18 and it was in the music business. There was no pay and no way in hell I would have brought that up. I was gaining business experience and deep, unique connections. I was also doing laundry and menial labor.

So to every intern who thinks the world revolves around them: Shut the hell up. Do your job, do it well, and innovate. Make an impression that doesn’t put your name in flashing lights on a lawsuit where every employer will blacklist you from now on. You don’t want to work your purdy, wittle, pwecious body and brain to the bone? Then don’t accept an internship. You’re nothing. You’re a peon. And that’s exactly how every single one of us starts off their careers. So get over it.

    Rant over.
