UW, I was glad I had a scholarship, room & board when I was in college. I would have never been able to attend college without it. Now, the current crop want all the benefits because they are entitled.
It is not that easy. Yes, there are the atheletes of the world that use college as a stepping stone before they can enter the professional world. College basketball is the prime example. Most talented high school players only play one year and then off to the pros. Unfortunately, it is sad to see an elite University like Duke go down this path for their basketball program.
Other athletes use it as a way to continue their high school life for another four years (lots of parties, meet girls, etc).
I think you will find a majority of these students actually are hard working athletes who earn their degree and then contribute to society as taxpayers.
I do not think that athletes should unionize, but the University owes these athletes more than tuition and room and board. For example, these universities make a large amount of money selling player’s jerseys in their university bookstores and other outlets. Many of these players cannot even afford to buy their own jersey or even have a simple meal out like other college students. By a simple meal out, I mean a pizzeria or its equivalent…not a trip to Morton’s.
This isn’t me. These are comments from Richard Sherman who made tons of money off him. He came from an economically disadvantaged background and could not even get nominal “spending money” from the University who was making millions off him to have a meal off campus or see a movie.
This is just food for thought.
By the way, the athletes that brought this case are from Northwestern. This is not from a second rate academic institution…..
Good! Now shut up and go to class…
