I don’t necessarily mind this. If the drones were more like those remote control toy racecars or planes – the ones that only work within a very small radius, I’d say this was a massive overreach. But, considering the fact that drones can go so much further and higher than a toy plane, and have the potential to be able to do much more than a simple toy car, it makes sense. It’s similar to having to register most moving vehicles – cars, boats, planes, etc.
If they keep this to commercial operators or serious hobbyists, I don’t mind. But I doubt my little toy helicopter can get much above 50′ and it has to stay within eyesight as I don’t have a camera on it.
Should I be able to shoot one down if it hovers over my house? Should it be okay to be hiking up in the mountains and have them suddenly swooping over me? Either they need to be regulated or a wild west format will prevail, I’d hate to shoot one down but I am getting tempted.
scott, you should absolutely have the right to shoot one down if it is hovering over your property and peeping into your house etc. I am sure there are plenty of perverts out there who have and will do this.
