Right now, I would choose an autonomous car over riding with a drunk driver or a texting/distracted driver. Other than that, I don’t feel the autonomous vehicle is a proven, safe vehicle. They need much more time and experience with the many traffic situations that arise.

Jack, new story out that a Tesla was hacked and told to change lanes. It did in a test situation. Oops!

About 1.3 million people are killed around the world annually in vehicle accidents on the road. Autonomous vehicles have the potential to reduce road fatalities by 90%, potentially saving over 30,000 lives per year in the United States alone. Waymo’s autonomous vehicles have driven way over a million miles on U.S. streets in autonomous vehicles without a serious accident. If I had the opportunity to ride in one of their autonomous vehicles, I would certainly be willing to do so. Not sure of the current state of Tesla’s AutoPilot, but when it was introduced, the manual said it was only to be engaged on 4-lane highways and the driver was supposed to keep hands on the steering wheel and remain vigilant at all times.

Great! But I’ll wait until AI vehicles are ACTUALLY safer, not theoretically safer, through testing and refinement. I’m expecting to have to wait several years.

Scott, would you be willing to go out in the street with an autonomous car coming at you at about 50 MPH and hope the software would stop it in time? Hey, if it can’t see an 18 wheeler and stop, I doubt if a pedestrian would have a chance. Be sure your will is in force.
