So if the AZ legislature passed a law banning texting while driving and I rear ended another car while I was making waffles in my glovebox waffle iron, I would be off the hook because I wasn’t texting?

Dristracted driving laws should not be restricted to one or two stupid behaviors. All distracted driving should be illegal.

I’ve yet to see anyone making waffles while driving. I see texting all the time. It’s gotten so I can pick out drivers that are on the phone or texting just by how badly they are driving.

What’s to hurt by passing this bill and sending the message this should not continue? Look at how attitudes about wearing seat belts have changed in the last 20 years. We heard the same arguments then that seat belt laws are hard to enforce, blah, blah, blah.

Hi Pat- I was kidding about making waffles in my car. But what if a driver were to shave while driving. With a Bic razor. With shaving cream. I’ve actually seen that here in Phoenix. The texting law would not affect this idiot so he would not be charged if caught shaving instead of texting.

Anyone caught texting, shaving, making waffles, or knitting a scarf while driving should be charged. In other words, ANY distracted driving should be illegal.

I too live in Phx and cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to lay on the horn when the idiot next to me is drifting into my lane because they’re driving with their knees and holding onto their phone for deal life while I’m sure making the most important decision of their life.

At least I drive a pick-up and have a bit of an advantage point when they start to head my way…

The fine was going to be $50 if you were caught and if involved in an accident $200 – What’s the use? Unless they make the punishment fit the crime it is just another weak link in the judicial system.

And how many cops would enforce it? Zero… Heck, they’re just trying to hold onto their jobs as it is with the budget crisis looming large over their heads –

I hate texting drivers – I don’t text while driving, while I do use a blue-tooth on my cell when I need to make a call (No I don’t pull over)

They’re going to wait till someone gets killed here to pull their head out their butts and put something on the books that has merit. Until then… When life gives you lemons…squirt the juice in the eyes of your enemies!!!

Every state has “driving while distracted” violation codes on the book. and law enforcement has been giving people tickets for doing so on the cell phone since I got my first cell phone in 1993. If whatever you’re doing (dog on lap, eating, talking on phone) interferes with your dirivng, you’re gonna get the ticket. In Ca. they passed a specific law to get the msg across and try to stop folks in advance. And yes, they are writing tickets like mad…especially for kids…and should. Cops knwo they can’t let anyone see them ignore a violator…they are compelled to pull them over for such a blatant violation. One guy almost rear-ended me twice on a narrow road in one phone call before the law passed. I yelled at him to hang up and he admitted it was all about the call. Current trends are- no texting, must use headset to talk, must use voice-automated dialing (can’t touch phone). Within two years, most states will ban cell phone use in a moving car entirely.

80% percent of all rear end collisions (the most frequent vehicle accident) are caused by driver inattention, following too closely, external distraction (talking on cell phones, shaving, applying makeup, fiddling with the radio or CD player, texting, etc.) and poor judgment. I doubt if we’ll ever stop the madness so I got one of these sparebumper.com to protect my family and vehicle.

Two days after SB 1344, authored by Sen. Al Melvin, R-Tucson, foundered in the Senate Committee of the Whole, the panel endorsed the bill 17-11. A final vote by the full Senate would send the measure to the House.
