Equale Moves On, Rusbuldt Moves In At the Big ‘I’

April 23, 2001

Robert A. Rusbuldt has stepped up as the new CEO of the Independent Ins-urance Agents of America (IIAA), replacing Paul A. Equale, who will now be focusing on his role as Chairman of the Democratic Business Council.

Equale is joining a firm and will be supplying political and legislative consulting and lobbying to the IIAA.

The news of Equale’s departure brought praise for his past accomplishments, along with hopes for the future as Rusbuldt assumes his new role.

SAFECO President and CEO Mike McGavick noted, “I’ve had the pleasure of working with Paul in many capacities—as a trade association colleague during my years at the American Insurance Association, in my work at CNA and, now, in my leadership position at SAFECO.

“I have always been impressed by Paul’s fervor and deep commitment to upholding the needs and interests of agents and brokers. At the same time, I have no doubt Bob Rusbuldt will do a great job for the Big ‘I’ and the agents it serves going forward, and any change brings new opportunities for success.”

IIAA President-Elect Thomas B. Ahart credited Equale with a number of accomplishments in positioning IIAA as a leader in Washington and in the industry.

“Paul has enjoyed a long and distinguished 19-year career with IIAA. His many contributions to independent agents have resulted in a healthier business environment, technological advances and better consumer awareness of the agency system.”

Rusbuldt joined the Big “I” as a senior lobbyist in May 1986 and was named executive vice president and COO in 1998 after successfully leading IIAA’s government affairs efforts for many years. Rusbuldt will use his many years of experience to chart a positive course for the many challenges confronting independent agents and the IIAA.

“I look forward to addressing the issues and challenges facing our members—implementing a national branding program and strengthening advocacy for independent agents on legislative and legal issues, industry affairs, education and other vital areas of importance for agents and brokers,” Rusbuldt stated.
