I have a Roofer/Carpenter with 26,000/48,000 in payroll that needs workers comp in Illinois. Does anyone have any ideas where I can go. They are currently in the pool. Any advice or suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

I worked for three years for a roofer in Southeastern PA who never offered an ounce of coverage for me. Had I ever been hurt I would have been on my own. He used to say, \”if you fall and get hurt your fired\”. Yet he enabled more drug addicts then a methadone clinic. The real issue here is how many people are seriously hurt and why?
If you take stupid chances and or use shitty equiptment and or half to all of your crew is still high on the sauce, well then there are going to be injuries.
But as far as these injuries are concerned; how many are actually serious injuries? I am inclined to believe that a lot of guys will absolutely milk the system if it is available to them. Let\’s face it, a lot of people don\’t want to work, and they roof because they can\’t work anywhere else…(due to the sauce and other forms of self entertainment). I myself have worked with some of the most idiotic people society has to offer, and it\’s a wonder I\’ve truly fell in love witht the trade.

Roofing isn\’t a trade that many people truly enjoy and want to do, and that is, I am sure, reflected in the claims.

*I myself had an injury this past summer while working for another gentlemen, (involving a nail gun and my wrist) that would have probably been a great excuse for a lot of guys out there. Yet I dealt with it like a man, and instead of making a stink about it, I went to the hospital and took care of it with my health insurance. I went back to work the next day.

I doubt anyone that I have worked with or for since I\’ve been in this trade would have had the sense of self responsibility and concern for the business owners livelihood that I showed in that situation.

I absolutely believe that the majority of roofers would have seen an oportunity to make money while sitting at home.

I am now retired now after over 40
years as an independent ins. broker
    for all types of contractors.
I think a good risk manager can save a roofing co. fifty percent of W C costs by safety and working
the experience mod. I’m thinking of going back to work in this area
as I do know const ins.

There are many variables including a non workers comp program that can save you alot of money. Contact an agent that is experienced in WC or me at 713 498-5600 if you are in Texas.

The insurance market is very soft right now meaning price is going down and insurance companies are being agressive , you can get a free workers comp at http://www.nexus-insurance.com

I’ve been a roofer in Florida for over two decades and at one point owned my own business. At the time workers comp was at 63% this coupled with over regulation and a lack of sufficient working capital drove me out of business. I had plenty of work and a good reputation but couldn’t afford to hire a crew, and I wasn’t about to do what most other contractors in the area did and not cover their workers. In all my years of roofing I have only been insured by one company. Fact is most roofing companies don’t offer a future for their employees like stable competitive wages, 401’s, health insurance, paid vacations ect., so it is unlikely that career minded people will become roofers. What your left with is the dregs of society and unskilled workers. Roofing is a physically demanding job and over time will cause back and knee problems (trust me), and for someone to be left with no insurance or retirement savings after a lifetime of hard work is devastating. Offer better pay and benefits and you will attract better employees and cut down on insurance costs. Perhaps insurance companies could offer discounts to employers that offer more benefits to their employees?
