Farm Bureaus across the nation will make safety a priority this spring by participating in the Agricultural Safety Awareness Program during Agricultural Safety Awareness Week, March 5-11, 2006.
The purpose of the program is to remind agricultural producers to take the time to work in a safe manner, repairing or replacing safety devices that protect them, their family members, and employees from injuries and fatalities on the farm and ranch.
Nolan Ryan, baseball Hall of Fame pitcher, rancher and Farm Bureau member, has joined the effort by asking all agricultural communities to make safety a part of their spring training.
“Starting the season off right begins with careful preparation,” Ryan said. “Farmers, ranchers and baseball players alike must take the steps necessary to prevent injuries in order to have a truly productive season.”
The 2006 theme, “Step Up to the Plate for Farm Safety,” celebrates the many positive steps the agricultural community takes in creating safer farms and ranches. Just as players must during spring baseball training, farmers and ranchers need to renew their efforts, prepare prior to the season and practice to have a more successful year, he said.
The annual agricultural safety event recognizes the rich tradition of America’s farming and ranching culture in producing safe and abundant food, and the involvement of all members of the farm family in age-appropriate tasks.
“Like passing the love of sports from generation to generation, farm and ranch safety can be passed from grandparent, to parent, to child and back again,” Ryan said. “Everyone wins with safety!”
ASAP is part of the Farm Bureau Safety and Health Network. The network is made up of professionals affiliated with state Farm Bureaus who share an interest in identifying and decreasing safety and health risks associated with agricultural and rural life.
