Alabama Insurance Agent Parker Falls Short in Race for Congress

Democratic state Sen. Parker Griffith won a hotly contested election to the open 5th Congressional District seat in north Alabama, keeping the seat in his party’s column where it has been for more than 100 years.

Griffith narrowly defeated Huntsville insurance agency executive Wayne Parker, a Republican, who was making his third race for the seat.

With 98 percent of the votes reported, Griffith had 153,834 votes (52 percent) compared to Parker’s 144,149 (48 percent) to win the seat vacated by Rep. Bud Cramer.

Parker is a vice president with Insurance Office of America (IOA), one of the largest privately-held property/ casualty insurance agencies in the US. Joining IOA in 2003 he became a shareholder in 2007. He began his career in commercial insurance with Hilb, Rogal and Hamilton in 1998.
