California’s Mass of Insurance-Related Bills

February 24, 2014

There are a number of bills currently under consideration by California Legislature that may be of interest to agents, brokers and insurance professionals in general.

Bills under consideration include everything from changes to the insurance code to texting while driving to uninsured motorists to surplus lines insurance.

Lobbyist John Norwood, owner of Norwood Associates in Sacramento, recently issued an update on pending bills that he feels should get the attention of people in the insurance industry.

Norwood noted that 2013 was the first year of California’s two-year legislative session and that roughly 2,300 bills were introduced in the beginning of the year. Some were signed, while others were killed or vetoed last year. Many of those bills that did not advance in 2013, depending on where they were stalled, became eligible for consideration in 2014.

Bills under consideration include everything from changes to the insurance code to texting while driving to uninsured motorists to surplus lines insurance.

Norwood’s list covers bills introduced last year that are still in play, as well as those introduced this year.

The list is extensive, and he offers his take on why members of the insurance industry would be interested in them. Over the course of this legislative session, some of the bills listed by Norwood may be gutted and amended to represent entirely different proposed laws, while others my stay in tact and make it to the governor’s desk.
