Michael L. Browne, the non-executive chairman of the board of the Harleysville group, was elected to the National Association of Independent Insurers Board of Governors at its recent Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.
The announcement indicated that, although board members normally serve a three-year term, the pending merger with the Alliance of American Insurers “may redefine that time frame.”
Browne was elected non-executive chairman of the board of Harleysville in October 2003. He has served as a director of Harleysville Group Inc. since it went public in 1986.
Browne, who served as Penna. insurance commissioner from 1980 to 1983, oversees the international insurance practice group for the law firm of Reed Smith, LLP, in Philadelphia. He joined the firm as a partner in 1983, and served as managing partner of its Delaware Valley regional office from 1993 to 2000. He was appointed to his current position in 2001.
