cringing as I heard a former employer give an absolutely glowing reference for a person who was an absolute nightmare to work with – downright nasty, seething with resentment, not willing to learn the tasks required of the position, just a nightmare of person to work with – for fear of a lawsuit.
The company policy later became, they would only verify the dates a former employee worked for them. Can you imagine, working like a dog for someone for a number of years, being let go for lack of work, then knowing that your ex-employer would only verify your date of hire and last day of work?

While I have always worked very hard in each job situation, my boss has not always been appreciative of my contributions. As such, I prefer that some of my prior employers only verify work dates. I would not want some prior bosses to be able to say more. When you fill out a job application, you give your prospective employer the right to investigate any employment listed–not just with good things to say…that’s what references are for (if you’re asked for them).
