The post office needs to adopt tougher rules so that they require ID from anyone wishing to submit a forwarding address change. I became the victim of ID theft when someone stole my mail (because the mail was being left hanging outside the slot) and then had it all forwarded to an abandoned building. The way the rules are now, I could go to the post office, and leave off a change of address form with no questions asked…diverting anyone’s mail anywhere. The disclaimer at the bottom of the form saying it is a federal offense will deter most of us…but not the criminal who is out to work the system to their own advantage.

My wife and I just subscribed for this phenominal service called the identity theft shield..It’s great, it offers credit reports, credit alerts, monitoring and assigns a private investigator to assist with restoration if we ever become a victim..A lot of other companies we looked at only offered monitoring..We said, what do we do if it happens??For only 13bucks a month.. we have a lot more piece of mind than what whe had before…I recommend this service to anyone out there looking to protect themselves and increase their awareness..Tks

The New Jersey law is very similar to Wisconsin’s. Would be interesting to see if the two are identical. Wisconsin’s went into effect last August. Specifies that the location of the victim is the location of the crime not the location of the criminal. Also requires local police to take the report and to prosecute.
