A Burlington, Vermont roofing company is facing $18,000 in fines for a series of alleged safety violations after an employee fell to his death last December.
A-One Roofing has been cited by the Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration with three alleged violations stemming from the investigation into the death of Ross Bell, 24, of Burlington.
A-One Roofing owner Ron Lamphere is appealing.
The state argues A-One didn’t ensure that a fall protection system was in place, didn’t ensure that materials were stored more than six feet from the edge of the roof and that employees hadn’t been adequately trained.
And the company did not have workers’ compensation insurance in place, leading to a separate $5,000 fine, which has not paid, said VOSHA Director Robert McLeod said.
Since the proposed fines have been appealed, the quasi-judicial VOSHA Review Board will hold a hearing at which VOSHA will have to prove the violations occurred.
Bell’s widow, Rhonda Bell, is suing A-One Roofing and the Burlington Housing Authority, which owned the property Bell was working on.
