October 26, 2011

Chartis has appointed Tim Carter as chief underwriting officer for the company’s global commercial insurance unit. He will be responsible for underwriting leadership, strategy and governance for the financial lines, specialty, property, casualty and global risks solutions businesses within global commercial insurance.

Carter will lead the insurer’s effort to enhance risk selection and underwriting tools, as well as ensure greater consistency in the underwriting process worldwide, the company said. He will play a key role within Chartis’ global commercial management team as the insurer continues to refine the structure of the business as part of the corporate reorganization announced earlier this year.

He joins Chartis from Zurich Financial Services Group, where he was the chief underwriting officer for Zurich in North America. His previous positions at the company included serving as European chief underwriting officer, underwriting director for personal lines, and pricing director for commercial and corporate business in the U.K. Carter began his career as an actuarial consultant for Watson Wyatt. He is a Fellow of the Institute of the Actuaries.
