It is awful that that the emergency FEMA assistance is being so slow for these storm victims and I agree with the majority of the comments made in this article regarding the FEMA aid to this area.

It is my understanding that the Jan 4th bill was about the NFIP insuranceprogram. This is insurance funding. The funds being added to NFIP is not aid. The money being paid out is claim proceeds. The claimants that are receiving these funds paid an insurance premium.

I think that the general public may not understand the difference between FEMA aid and the NFIP flood insurance program. As we all know, they are not the same thing.

I went through Hurricane Andrew a little over 20 years ago and I don’t remember any of us sitting around waiting for the government to help. We were out of our home for 11 months, but we persevered, we adapted, we overcame. We and our neighbors helped each other and expected and received very little from government. I feel bad for the Sandy victims, but move on and stop looking to big brother, he’s broke.

I remember Hurricane Andrew also. And yes, there was NO HELP back then from the Government. Everyone is complaining about not getting help from FEMA. I feel bad for everyone but give it a BREAK people. FEMA at this point is a priviledge.

FEMA – Federal Emergency Management Agency

Do I have to use the money (for home repair, rental assistance, etc) as stated in the letter?

FEMA provides assistance to meet your housing and personal property related needs after a disaster. You will receive a letter from FEMA via U.S. Mail which will tell you what expenses the money covers.
Please read this letter carefully and also refer to your “Help After A Disaster, An Applicant’s Guide to the Individuals and Households Program” which was mailed to you after you registered for assistance.

If you do not use the funds in the way they were intended to be used, you will not be able to request additional assistance. Please remember to keep the receipts for three years showing how you spent the assistance provided to you.

Maximum repair for your property “HOME” $20k to $30K.

NFIP – National FLood Insurance Program – which you do pay a HUGE premium for flood insurance if you live in a flood zoned area.

I wonder if all the (generally white, conservative) folks hit by floods in TN have a lot of sympathy for these folks belly-aching about a bureacracy being slow? They received no help, no news coverage.

If this were a Republican president, perhaps there would be some coverage of this storm response. Alas, there is not.

The bright side…everyone is getting a warning as to how healthcare should be. Try waiting 6 months for your “rush” emergency procedure to be approved.

If the past has served as any indication, everyone needs to help themselves. Since when are assistance programs speedy? I have never seen this.
I have never been through a hurricane (praise the Lord) but I have been through many striaght line wind storms the literally sweep everything away like an eraser. In my town we help each other out, get trees off of houses, help feed and clothes those without and we are not waiting on the Government assistance programs. I agree with Whodathunkit, waiting around for someone who has no money themselves does not seem wise. (Not that anyone has any money themselves)

FEMA isn’t supposed to be rebuilding homes. You as a citizen should have appropriate coverages for your situation. Claims for folks who had floods should not have been delayed, but tired of listening to everyone bellyache who didn’t have insurance that they should be bailed out.

Also, why is the over $100MM in funding for Head Start in the appropriations requested? And money for Alaska and Washington State environmental projects?
