Massachusetts Insurance Federation Appoints Murphy as Executive Director

The Massachusetts Insurance Federation has named John P. Murphy as its new executive director, effective March 23. He succeeds James T. Harrington, who retired from the post in February.

As executive director, Murphy will manage the Boston-based association’s advocacy on pertinent public policy issues before the legislative and executive branches. He brings more than 25 years of experience in the property/casualty insurance industry and knowledge of the legal and public policy issues that impact the association’s member companies.

Murphy brings both company and trade association experience to his new responsibilities, having worked in-house at Massachusetts insurers as well as at trade associations. He most recently served as director of state affairs for the Northeast Region of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), a position he has held since 2012.

The association’s 24 member companies and their affiliates write over $7.5 billion in property/casualty insurance premiums in Massachusetts, representing nearly 60 percent of the total P/C premiums in the state.
