I hope it does not head toward Florida…The citizens of the south are not prepared for a third hurricane to hit. Charley and Frances did enough damage, and I fear that if Ivan does turn it will be three strikes your out.

Hurricane Ivan on it’s current path north of Venezuela’s Atlantic coast has smashed into the Island of Grenada with “hellacious winds” that reduced concrete homes to rubble and sent the island’s red zinc roofs fluttering through the air.

Ivan is the first Category 4 storm to hit Caribbean islands since Hurricane Luis in 1990.

If Ivan remains on his present course Florida, at least the West Coast could feel some of the outer bands, but who can really project large tropical storms a week ahead with any firm degree of accuracy?

The other question is, after Ivan how many more powerful Atlantic hurricanes will we be concerned about during the 2004 season?

Hi. I live in Aruba. It is now 8 ‘o clock p.m. A little rain. But we expect the worse round 2 a.m. Reports are that we will get a lot of rain/thunderstorms. Some Hotel guests allready evacuated. This because some hotels are too close to the beach. Rough beaches right now. But up till now, everything is still calm.

Thank you very much Jane for the information. I am forwarding this information for the family in Curacao Netherlands Antilles who are very anxious while they are expecting the hurrican to hit them at 4 this afternoon. My husbands parents are native to the Island of Greneda. So you can imagine the stress we are going through, knowing that Greneda has already been hit, knowing that it is so close to Curacao and knowing that it might be on its way to Florida where I live right now. but thanks again. Our ABC islands have been spaired for 50 years. So nobody I know can remember a hurricane passing.

    Hi,
I live here and we are awaiting the developmentof Ivan it is presently +- 100mls N of Curacao & Bonaire heading west. This will put the eye +- 75 to 150 miles north of Aruba. The anticipated wind speed is 50 – 70kts with 15 – 18′ seas and of course plenty of rain. This will be managable with no danger other than to properties.
IF it exceeds or overtakes expectation I will keep you posted. You can call me on +297 593 0552 if you are really worried.
    Ciao

    Dear All,

When we see and experience these disasters we should be reminded that the second coming of Jesus is very close. He told us in His word that these things would happen so we will not be able to stop them. The only thing that we can do is to stay close by Him for his comfort and be ready to go with Him when He comes. God loves us.

Our son, Carl Stroud & Sarah Sulvian rode out Ivan with its 116 MPH winds in the Gem Hotel last night. Roof blown off part of Gem. They walked to AP today and found everything destroyed as far as they could see. Includes radio, tv, cell phone, Air Control towers, businesses. Boats tossed ashore. No one at AP to tell them how – if – they will get out Saturday. Told them to go to the Embassy.

I can only begin to imagine the amount of damage that Hurricane Ivan could cause to Florida. First Hurricane Charley, a category 4, then Hurricane Frances which thank god went down to a category one, and now Hurricane Ivan a category 4 (going on 5). If Hurricane Ivan does hit Florida, and goes through the West Coast my city will be gone. Hurricane Charley destroyed Charlotte County. I wonder what will be left of it if Hurricane Ivan hits it. It took a category 4 Hurricane to get Charlotte County on a map, can a category 5 Hurricane take it off??

    Hi Judith Uka & Stanette,

    Kon ta bai ku bosonan?

I just listened at the radio in Curacao and Mr. Toko Winklaar just explained on Radio Hoyer in Curacao that Aruba is trying as best as they can to prepare. They are buying Plywood to cover the windows and canned foods, flashlights etc. Mr Nel Oduber already asked the Netherlands for help in case that is necessary. Late last night they told the people that schools and Government offices would be closed. So people are at home preparing right now. In Bonaire its about the same information. The reporter of Bonaire indicated that Gezaghebber Domacasse of Bonaire has things under control. They were already experiencing high waves. And for Curacao, it is slowly but surely sinking in that this is serious. In the mean time also al Government and business offices are closed. In Curacao the Dutch Marine Kazerne will help with a shelter.
Still I keep praying that it will not hit hard because our islands are just not prepared for these furious hurricanes.

    Dear friends,
Thanks to the Lord for saving we here in Curacao from the worse that could have happened to us with this hurricane Ivan. We were so happy celebrating the victory of winning the world championship of little league, when suddenly the news break out that the hurricane Ivan is heading towards our direction. Everybody became very sad even though we are accustom with hurricanes over here, but we are aware with the hurricanes that stroked our sister island St. Marten. We hopped from the bottom of our hearts that the same miracle would happened with all the following countries especially Jamaica and Cuba that are right in the projected route of Ivan.

    Update on Ivan.

At the moment there are some heavy rains there in curacao and bonaire. there are also 5 meters high waves on the north coast of bonaire. The hurricane is moving with a speed of 28km/h, WNW. the eye of the hurricane will pass bonaire at some 150 km north of the island…. there will be some damage caused by strong winds, but nothing serious so far. the people there are very good prepared, they are well informed by the government. th eye of the hurricane will pass bonaire at approx. 19:00 local time. GOD help them all!!!

I compiled information from different people from a message board and send it to my family in Curacao on the situation in Greneda

Maybe this might help some of you out there trying to find info about Greneda.

A Battalion from Trinidad landed at 1 p.m today to assess damages and assist
with island wide clean up and restoration. Telephone Land lines will not be
restored before 4-5 days. Most people with initial cellular contact are
unable to charge their batteries so contact via cellular is reducing. An
extremely high percentage of households have been destroyed, I do not want
to quote the % given until they are absolutely certain , but the radio
reports coming in from Grenada to Barbados are describing the island as a
“total wreck”. There is another team heading from Trinidad to Grenada
tonight and they are responsible for assessing damage in order to provide
the necessary aid from Trinidad. They will also be responsible for locating
and finding people and will post an “enquiries website” for persons who want
to contact them directly for information on friends and relatives. Sad to
say, they will also be posting the deceased list as soon as they can
    positively identify people.

Information from a caller at Cable & Wireless states that words cannot describe the area overlooking the Wharf. “It’s like someone dropped a bomb” total destruction.

The following places in St. George’s are damaged, in fact “mash up” was the expression that she used.

    Convent
Mother Rose (St. Louis girls RC)
    PBC
    Catholic church
    Anglican church
    Presbyterian church
    Court house
    House of Parliament
    Norton Hall
    Stadium (gone)

    Darbeau hillside (littered with houses)

Tanteen flooded, playing field, at least 3 feet of water on the netball court
    Lowthers lane – everything
    Anglican highschool
    GBSS
    Palmer school – partially damaged

    Springs school
In Springs from Chichester nursing home going back inside of Dixie, all houses severly damaged.

I believe it was one of the Cherman’s who got a call out. Said they were alive and uninjured. I’ve stayed at Flambouyant. If Coyoba was destroyed, so was Flamboyant. Mariposa was reported earlier as heavily damaged. Don’t know about Cinnamon Hill. All areas on the southern end seem to be the worst. Not that any area escaped unscathed.

    RICHMOND HILL COMPLETELY DESTROYED

Previous reports have Coyoba Resort destroyed. No word on the guests whereabouts or condition. Most of Grande Anse Beach area was devastated.

I lived in Miami when Andrew destroyed the city. I can tell you there is’nt anything more scary then when the roof of the home you live in takes off like a rocket in the sky. Looking through the cracks off your boarded up windows and seeing debree flying at speeds that if it would hit you it would be over with your life. I just talked to my sister who lives on Bonaire, and she said that no one on the island is really prepared for a hurricane, and no one has boarded up their windows. They never have hurricanes this far down in the carribbean, so the people are completely not aware of the danger. And also have no idea how to prepare for a storm of this size. I was born on Bonaire and lived there 17 years, I remember when there was a storm in the area we actually went outside to the seaside to look at the waves. I hope the people realize that this is’nt just a little storm, and get them selves into safe shelter.
I live in the Netherlands now, but if things will go as bad as i expect, i will be there on the first plane out to help out.

I am Antillian and live in Florida since 2001. So I am very concerned about what happens in the Netherlands Antilles and in Greneda. I am listening at the radio on the Internet on http://www.radiohoyer.com and also at http://www.caribonair.com which both broadcast in the language Papiamento. Curacao does seen to have a plan in place but it is very rudimentary. at this moment they only have 3 shelters and they hope to open 8 more. People are not boarded up, no storm windows, no water stored, almost everybody has electrical phones which are useless when power fails. I truly hope the Islands remain lucky and that the storm deviates at the last moment. But at the moment it remains a hurricane 4 with winds with up to 130mph.

I live in central Florida, Polk county, Hurricane Charley did a number to the area that I live in and then Frances did more damage, now we are all terrified that Ivan is coming to finish us off. The projected path has Ivan coming right through central Florida again. My husband and I have lived here all of our lives and we have NEVER seen anything like this. Hurricanes are usually downgraded to tropical storms by the time they reach us, because we are so far inland, but Charley proved that theory WRONG. I must say I am very scared of what the next one will do.

my name is paul phillip i live in fontenoy st georges Grenada which is located on the western side of grenada, our village was torn apart from the high winds of hurricane ivan only leaving about 7 houses with roofs and the remaining 160 either half way bolwn off of totally blown off. the picture is the same for the whole country. even our new national stadium lay in ruins, the whole country is devestated, it will take a least 3 years for the country to be on its feet, and that will only happen if every body get together and work as one……

My fiance and I are supposed to leave for our honeymoon 9/27 for Aruba. We were originally going to Jamaica and got rerouted to Aruba a month ago because our hotel decided to close for renovations. I now know that this was a blessing hearing and seeing it’s condition. God Bless all those people. My question is what is the current condition in Aruba? What type of damage was done? We don’t know what to do because the tour company is now saying that if we cancel and not go to Aruba..we will not get our $ back for 6-8 weeks which means that we won’t be going on a honeymoon at all. Advice please!
