XL Insurance Names Báez-Safa Chief U/W Officer, Professional Lines Commercial Risk

XL Insurance, the global insurance operations of the XL Group, announced the appointment of Cristiana Báez-Safa as Chief Underwriting Officer Professional Lines for its Commercial Risk business outside of North America. She is based in Paris and reports to William Wharton, Chief Underwriting Officer, Professional Lines International.

XL noted that “Báez-Safa has more than 25 years of experience in financial lines insurance, having held various regional and global financial lines management positions at AIG, Marsh and, most recently, Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty. Prior to that, she practiced law with various law firms in the US, France and the United Arab Emirates, working on management and professional liability, insurance and claims matters.”

Wharton commented: “Cris is an experienced Professional Lines underwriter who is well respected by brokers and clients. She has a proven track record of successfully building an international insurance book. Under her leadership we will further strengthen our capabilities in the growing and dynamic Commercial Risk market.”

Báez-Safa stated that she is excited by the prospect of joining XL. She added that there is “great potential in the commercial D&O and other management liability lines, as today’s complex business and regulatory environment increases the challenges faced by Directors and Officers. XL Insurance’s strong underwriting expertise and product design, coupled with international claims experience, will allow us to further deliver comprehensive products and services that effectively respond to the specific needs of clients and brokers.”

Báez-Safa holds a Juris Doctor Degree from St. John’s University and a Masters Degree in International Law (LLM) from Georgetown University and is a member of the New York State and International Bar Associations.
