Former Mich. Commissioner Fitzgerald Dies at 49

Former Michigan insurance regulator Frank Fitzgerald died this month at the age of 49. He was appointed commissioner of what would become the state’s Office of Financial and Insurance Services in 1999 before resigning shortly after Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm took office in 2003.

Fitzgerald, a Republican, was at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when he suddenly died, according to the Associated Press. He also represented Eaton County in the state House from 1987-1998 and was speaker pro tempore in 1995-96.

Fitzgerald is survived by his wife, Ruth, his daughter, Ellen, his son, John, and his parents.
