Insurer Group Names Mo. Executive as State Advocacy Committee Chair

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies has named Kent Osborn, treasurer of the Mo.-based Cameron Mutual Insurance Company, as the new chair of its state advocacy committee.

Osborn has been selected to serve a two-year term. The committee is charged with oversight of the NAMIC state advocacy agenda before legislatures, regulators and national state legislative organizations. Osborn succeeds Michael McCarter of AIG as committee chair.

Key issues for NAMIC in 2006 include rate modernization, preservation of underwriting freedom and opposition to the imposition of SOX-like requirements on non-public insurance companies.

“I am pleased to be able to serve NAMIC in this position and what I take away from the committee will be more than I bring,” Osborn said. “This is a critical time for the insurance industry with several important challenges ahead. I look forward to offering the perspective of one insurance company from the heartland to the committee’s discussions.”

Previously, Osborn served as chair of the NAMIC Tax and Accounting Committee and is currently a member of the organization’s Natural Disasters Task Force. He has been active in the Insurance Accounting and Systems Association both nationally and with its Midwest chapter.

Schmelzer, NAMIC’s senior vice president of the organization’s state and regulatory affairs department. “He brings a common-sense approach both to insurance public policy and the advocacy means by which to achieve the optimal results for consumers and the property/casualty industry as a whole.”

Founded in 1895, Indianapolis, Ind.-based NAMIC identifies itself as a full-service national trade association with more than 1,400 member companies that underwrite 43 percent ($196 billion) of the property/casualty insurance premium in the United States.
