Mich. Special Legislative Session Includes Senior Discount Proposal

Lawmakers are expected to wrap up the 2005-06 session this week. Among the bills acted on and sent to Gov. Jennifer Granholm for her consideration this week:

Bills that would allow an automobile insurer to offer a premium discount to drivers 50 years of age and older. The driver must complete a traffic accident prevention driver safety course to be eligible.

Legislation that would give college students state scholarships of
up to $4,000. Gov. Granholm is expected to sign the bill.

Bills that would ban the sale of thermostats and some other products containing mercury.

The Senate passed bills designed to encourage the creation of a network of stem cell banks for umbilical cords and adult stem cells. Some bills headed to Granholm while others went back to the House for final passage.

Legislation that would move an office charged with assuring children’s safety in Michigan from the executive branch to the legislative branch.
