Good luck rebranding the tower! It will always be the Sears Tower. Good idea on paper, I wonder what PR firm they hired to come up with the name “Willis Tower” and how much they spent on that effort? Have fun working in the Sears Tower!
Hard to believe AON wouldn’t have gotten this branding opportunity, over Willis. Guess the new AON digs still top heavy on lease. Unless Willis and AON merge at some point? Hmmmm….
“There is no additional cost to the company associated with renaming the building.”
So there are no maps, directories, guides, signs, etc… pointing the way to the Sears Tower. None of those will have to be changed to Willis Tower. Guessing it’s the taxpayers thta will have to pay to update that info. Congrats!
Does anyone else think it’s a bit shady that Willis won’t have to pay any additional $$ to rename the building??? What about all the other tenants in the building? Why couldn’t they do this? Agreed – sorry willis, it will always be the Sears Tower
Rather than look for opportunities to make yourself feel important by dragging down, get a new act. It should be good to see someone in our business get visibility over an outdated and obsolete retail chain. Unless of course you need tools or a washer.
I think even though the London Company is moving into the building and the name is being changed to “Willis Tower”, which in my opinion is a nonsuitable name, residents of the city, such as myself will continue to call it the Sears Tower….its kind of in our blood. In retrospect it would be like the Trident Gum company buying Buckingham Palace and naming it Minty Fresh Palace…hmmm a little lame. Go home Willis
I can’t blame Willis for wanting to change the name of the tower. But it would be better if they kept the name to honor those who designed and built the fine building.
That flows real well, the Skidmore, Ownings, and Merrill Tower. Sears hasn’t had space in there for 5 years. I get it though,,, it does have sentimental value.. but at least the purchase of the name came with monthly rent payments to help support the actual building maintenance and use.. so why not? Who else is leasing space in this market. Give some credit where it is due.
Actually no credit due. Sears Tower is already over 80% occupied and now that United Airlines is in discussions about leasing over 3 times the space as Willis, the building is proportionately less vacant than many other struggling office towers in the loop.
Whutchoo talkin’ ’bout???

It will always be the Sears Tower. I guess it won’t be long till someone trys to rename the Golden Gate Bridge.
Anybody that asks what L stop lets out to Willis Tower will be riding the train all day long.

There are some things you shouldn’t rename; this building is one of them. It will take quite a while for folks to catch on…
Just like anyone in New York looking for the RFK Bridge. It will always be the Triboro.
Merging with HRH…..check
Renaming Sears Tower…..check
Renaming Wrigley Field to Willis field….NEXT! Get ready Cubs fans!
If you’re old enough to laugh at this “Subject” line, you’re old enough to kind of feel sad about the renaming.
Wow, Chicago without the Sears Tower. What’s next, Chicago without the Tribune? (oh, I forgot, that reduction’s already underway).
LMAO Windy City Native, all day long!! That was too funny!
That’s Big Mike! (I’m typing too fast this afternoon!)

If you think renaming the Sears Tower is a good idea for the industry, I’ve got some beautiful beachfront property to sell you in Arizona.
