Insured losses in Kansas in 2009 that resulted from storms are higher than the record set during 2008, the Kansas Insurance Department reports.
In 2009, storm-related losses based on some 137,000 insurance claims are estimated at $602 million. The losses occurred to insured real and personal property from hail, wind, tornado and winter weather.
The 2009 number topped 2008 claims by more than $6 million. The $596 million in estimated storm losses in 2008 came from 131,500 claims.
Estimated flood losses and other insured perils are not included in the data. The data include only estimated storm losses reported at the request of the Insurance Commissioner by the private insurance companies selling and servicing property insurance coverage in Kansas.
Estimated storm loss data are collected from insurance companies by the Commissioner, usually on a monthly basis and through special calls to report particularly significant tornado damage in cities, counties or other affected areas.
