Kansas is one of the states with a Republican governor that refused to expand Medicaid. In fact, Republicans have complete control of all branches of state government in Kansas. Governor Sam Brownbeck has shown the entire country what unimpeded far right-wing governance looks like, and the picture isn’t a pretty one. State revenues are down, the state economy is in the toilet, uninsured rates are up, and the state is lagging behind its peers.
Kansas should be viewed as what it is– a resounding condemnation of the far right’s agenda. I’m no bleeding heart, but we need to get back to a place where the GOP supports common-sense policies where results trump ideology. Staunch ideologues like Brownbeck have run the state into the ground in pursuit of policies that make Ronald Reagan look like FDR.
