Michigan Regulators Suspend Licenses of Insurance Agent, Agencies

February 6, 2015

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) announced it suspended the insurance licenses of Alia Bahoora and her insurance agencies: Assurity Insurance Agency I, Assurity Insurance Agency II, Assurity Insurance Agency III and Assurity Insurance Agency IV.

The agencies are located in Harper Woods and Royal Oak, Mich.

DIFS also ordered Simen Delly and Linda Shunia, individuals working at the agencies without the proper education and licensure, to cease and desist from selling, soliciting and/or negotiating insurance.

The DIFS alleges that an investigation found that Bahoora, Delly, and Shunia had taken out more than 117 premium finance loans in customers’ names, without their consent or knowledge. It also showed that Bahoora collected insurance premium money from a customer, provided a fraudulent certificate of insurance, and used the money for her personal use.

The DIFS initiated the investigation in 2014 after receiving several complaints, regulators said.

“Misappropriating premiums, providing fraudulent certificates, and selling insurance without a license is illegal,” said DIFS Director Ann Flood. “I encourage consumers to contact our office to ensure an insurance agent or agency is properly licensed.”
