Estimate of Vandalism Damage at Michigan Ski Resort Quadruples

March 3, 2015

The general manager of a ski resort vandalized by University of Michigan students estimates the total damage is about four times the original estimate.

Barry Owens of Treetops Resort in Gaylord tells the Detroit Free Press the price tag will be closer to $430,000 after considering out-of-pocket expenses and legal fees. He says he doesn’t believe those responsible will pay the resort for the destruction they caused.

Six fraternities and sororities from the school damaged doors, furniture, fixtures and carpet at Treetops and Boyne Highlands resorts during an alcohol-fueled weekend in January.

Owens initially estimated the repair bill would be around $100,000 after students caused damage to 45 rooms.

About $30,000 in damage was done to 12 condos at Boyne Highlands near Petoskey.

University officials cut ties last week with Sigma Alpha Mu, a fraternity involved in the vandalism.
