I just love surveys that ask “duh” questions. Of course 90% would respond indicating that they hope their friends will drive more safely. Why not ask, “Would you like to have world peace?” Did you know that 90% of doctors surveyed responded that headaches can cause discomfort?
That was a great comment. The article is also titled incorrectly. Can I get a job at the IJ this year? I KNOW I can do a better job than this. When was driving safely ever a goal of the average teenager? Please!!!!

I never expected that outcome. Wow.
I was a responsible driver when I was a teen. Know why? Because I was SCARED TO DEATH of my parents. Know why? Because they would beat my a$$ if I messed up my car or someone else’s car. How did I know they would? Because they beat my a$$ when I acted like an idiot. Why? Because it was their job as parents!
Of course when I say “beat my a$$”, it’s a figure of speech. They didn’t tie me to a post and wail on me with a broomstick, although I might have deserved it sometimes. But I got reasonable and effective punishment, often in the form of manual labor, suspension of driving privileges and embarrassment (mum dropping me off and walking me to the front of the school in curlers, robe and fuzzy slippers).
Want your kid to drive like a responsible person? Threaten them and follow through! Don’t allow them to have other teen passengers (this minimizes the temptation to show off). Don’t allow them to ride with other teen drivers. Enforce curfew. If they act like an idiot, take away the car, drive them to school and walk them to the front door wearing bermuda shorts, platform shoes, a fright wig and red rubber nose. I guarantee your teenage maniac with think twice before acting like a moron behind the wheel again.

While I was scared of my parents catching me I drove like any other teenager without a brain. I was lucky. I didn’t get caught nor did I hurt anyone. My son, on the other hand, had two accidents within the first two months of being licensed. At the time I was living in Texas and I had to sign for his license as the responsible party. After the first accident I warned him I would take his license away if he had another. He did. The first accident he hurt two people in the other car. After the second accident I took his license to the local Department of Public Safety Office and turned in his license. The State Highway Patrolman was shocked. My son wasn’t. He was 16 and without a license for 1 year. It worked!
