Let’s see if Nationwide does anything to promote their independent agency brands, or if they’ll leave them to die on the vine under the constant barrage of “our price is cheaper than your price” commercials, including the one’s they have for their own captive force.
Marketmaker, it will be interesting to watch. In Illinois Allied and Harleysville have been duking it out for several months, often trying to outbid each other for accounts well below the market. they know that only one will survive in the state. It looks there will be battlegrounds to see who survives.
And lets see how they treat their very heavily weighted NY construction book. Does Nationwide know what they have on their hands, and what to do with it?
I commend Nationwide for moving toward the independent agent system. Yes, they have some learning to do about going the independent route and expanding their territory, but what better way than to purchase Allied in the midwest and now Harleysville for their Northeast presence.. Harleysville was and is a great carrier but has had major management issues in the southeast region in particular. Nationwide should improve this by move the Atlanta office to Gainsville and keep the Nahsville office and open up access to Harleysville for all Allied agents. That would be the best for the Nationwide/Allied agents and for the Harleysville agents. This is a very good thing for agents and both carriers.
Nationwide could have done what Allstate did to their agents by buying a direct online carrier like Eshurance. At least Nationwide has figured it out that you are the best way to distribute their products. They are not the Nationwide of years past!

Liberty Mutual did the same, and I’m stunned that Sentry hasn’t purchased a super regional yet. Perhaps Sentry will finally pull the trigger on the Selective or West Bend deal.

Wonder if I can now buy my Harleysville policy cheaper going direct to Nationwide then through an independant agent?
Can Harleysville get any CHEAPER than they already are? this is the cheapest commercial product on the street in our area, by at least 25 percent.
