This is ridiculous. The only way for an integrated self-driving car “system” to work is for EVERYONE to have one so the cars can be programmed to operate with each other as described. For that to happen, the government must be heavily involved which means increased taxation to provide self-driving cars to all the people who can’t afford them. You wouldn’t be able to have other cars on the roads for this to be feasible. This is already a failure in health care/health insurance as a concept. Stop. Just stop. Stop trying to program the world to work. Orwell is rolling over in his grave because we’ve learned nothing.

With the drought, has the price of hay gone up for your mule? How are you even capable of communicating with your Atari 64 Personal Computer with the optional tape drive memory storage system?

Come out from under the rock, you Luddite. Get real, or get with the times. These are concepts, not federal programs (yet).

I’m kind of looking forward to the day.. No more backseat drivers, The kids won’t ask if we are there yet? “I dunno ask the car”, and no more arguments about why don’t you stop and ask directions?

But will the car be able to tell you that you should not make a comfort stop because that interferes with the efficiency of vehicle operation?

Me too… This is a case where the technology may be ready, but there is no will or infrastructure to support it.

The first two bullet points confuse me. If there are still people in the car, why is there a reduction in safety equipment or steel?

Also, in the unlikely event a car has trouble (a flat tire for example) if there are no shoulders to pull over to, what is the driverless car to do? Travel with the pack at 60 MPH with a flat tire?

Finally, how will the states and counties compensate for lost funding due to the reduced number of speeding tickets?

If the car comes with run-flat tires, yes – the driverless car would drive itself to the closest shoulder, with speeds up to 55 miles per hour for at most 100 miles.

When the electronic guidance system fails or is interrupted by outside interference I can just see a 250 car pile up and endless streams of ambulance chasing attorneys close behind.

That is probably why one of the mentioned effects is “eliminates the need for auto insurance entirely”. Eventually the entire system will turn into a no-fault system just like WC. Statutorily defined benefits provided by some kind of fund that everyone pays into, perhaps based on a rate per mile traveled or something.

Dumb idea yet unless they intend for an entirely separate road system (also a dumb idea) where only driverless cars are allowed to operate.

Why is that such a dumb idea? In many places on major highways, lanes are dedicated to HOV; why not convert them to the driverless system and then phase in other lanes, too?

Yeah, most of these objections people are noting here are significant, but only temporary problems. The transition will take a long time but will eventually happen and it will be a good thing.

How long before someone or some country hacks into this system and shuts it down, speeds it up, inserts a malware, misdirects, etc. If there ever is a malfunction, the manufacturers and their software suppliers will be hung out to dry by lawyers and juries. Forget the WC model. There are ways around that as it is.
