Why is the U.S. one of the only modern and developed nation in the entire world that does not require employers to provide paid sick leave? At least 145 countries provide paid sick days for short- or long-term illnesses, with 127 providing a week or more annually. 98 countries guarantee one month or more of paid sick days. About half of the employers in the ‘greatest country in the world’ provide zero days of paid sick leave. Is this the best we can do?
This is just Commie talk. My dad continued to mix pesticide in open vats all through his lung cancer and chemo. If it wasn’t for the fall off the cat walk when he was weak from vomiting he’d still be working.
Is the lower number of injuries the result of a paid sick leave policy or is it that employers with such policies are also more likely to have effective workplace safety programs? It is more likely that what is being measured is the effectiveness of the safety programs rather than the presence of sick leave policies.
Interesting finding. Unfortunately, the trend seems to be other way, as employers are moving from sick days to PTO which encourages employees to come to work sick.
Thanks for this
