Insurance Firm Paying for Super Bowl Kickoff Return by Ravens’ Jones

The electrifying 108-yard kickoff return by the Baltimore Ravens’ Jacoby Jones that started the second half of the Super Bowl earned some lucky shoppers a cash rebate on recent purchases.

That was one of the Super Bowl-related promotions retailers ran with help from Dallas-based SCA Promotions, a firm that specializes in insuring promotions and prizes. The insurer backed retailers offering various prizes if a specified event occurred in the big game, such as an opening kickoff being returned for a touchdown.

SCA Promotions said it is paying out more than $290,000 collectively to companies for campaigns tied to the kickoff return by Jones.

For Furniture Mart, in Fort Morgan, Colo., that opening half kickoff meant rebating its customers all furniture purchased between Jan. 25-26. Once Jones ran into the end zone for only the ninth time in Super Bowl history, SCA Promotions said it began the process of cutting a check for more than $122,000 so that Furniture Mart could refund its customers who made a qualifying purchase on those days.

New Mexico-based Baillio’s appliance and electronics store hosted the same conditional rebate contest, which awarded the purchase price of select televisions to customers who bought during the promotion period. More than $100,000 in television purchases are being rebated for Baillio’s customers. According to SCA Promotions, customers are anxiously awaiting the check presentation party where they will claim their redemption checks.

“Conditional rebate promotions motivate customers to make a purchase because they know there is a chance to win their money back if a specific sports or weather event occurs. Businesses can offer incredible prizes without the worry and financial risk of rebating all their customers’ purchases,” said Chris Hamman, SCA Promotions vice president in a release. ”These promotions not only absolve them of the financial risk but also generate incredible media coverage.”

SCA Promotions said it is also making other payouts for the kickoff return including $50,000 to a radio station, $10,000 to the Rose Haven Civic Association and another $10,000 to Club O in Harvey, Illinois.

The firm has been in the news for another reason recently. It says it is trying to get back as much as $12 million in prize money it paid to disgraced biker Lance Armstrong for winning Tour de France races between 2002 and 2005. Armstrong has admitted using performance-enhancing drugs and been stripped of his titles.  SCA Promotions says the prize money was awarded under fraudulent circumstances.

SCA has covered billions of dollars in prize coverage and product promotions, lottery and casino jackpots, radio contests, direct mail, Internet and sports promotions. SCA has offices in Dallas, London, Las Vegas and Calgary.

    They are just predicting how much they need to pay out and when. The life actuarial tables are pretty accurate.
