A neck strength initiative is needed in all sports. The most recent study on mouth guards and helmets ignored the mouth guards effect on the temporal mandibular joint. Studies specifically measuring jaw joint position have shown a positive result in EEG evaluation. A nero muscular mouth guard designed to open neuro paths and balance the musculature of the neck and upper body, should be considered in those who are post orthodontic or have been diagnosed with Tmd. While no mouth guard will prevent cou contra cou concussion, it’s clear that some type of mouth guards are better suited and should be used in many cases. Yet no standard is in place to screen for upper body and neck strength imbalances or Tmd.
