Leave it to the attorneys to blame the MFG for the deaths of people when they don’t take down their storm shutters. At least the court at the end of the article got the ruling right.
The common sense in using these “protective devices” is no worse than the situation where a drunk gets behind the wheel and kills someone. He still drives and we don’t put a label on him saying “lookout, I may be drunk abd could kill your kid.” We just go on accepting the fact that our friends, neighbors, and co-workers will drink and get in wrecks…and maybe kill someone! Oh, well, stuff just happens. We’ve come to call it “collateral damage” in our everyday stressful lives?
She was nervous in her home… So how does locking the shutters from the OUTSIDE keep trouble out? This is just too stupid for words and there is no way the manufacturer should be responsible for such stupidity.
That being said, I could envision a circumstance during a storm when it would be necessary to quickly get out of the house so there should be a way to open these from the inside.
Williams is a hired gun for a company that has been selling a bogus Hurricane shutter system for years. Teh Fl Attorney General is at his door and the owner wants to try to make the industry suffer. They change the facts of the unfortunate deaths to make their story look good. This is the 5th news story on this topic in the last three months. They are going to every News outlet they can to get traction. I saw them in action at a Florida Building Commission meeting a few months ago and it would be best described as comical if it were not for the folks that have suffered a loss…. The code requires an emergency escape opening that has to be a door that is unobstructed and you can only cover windows right before a storm and must uncover right after. Not to mention that the customer can order alll types of systems that can be opened from the inside, even the steel panels. Which by the way weighed 30 pounds 25 years ago. These days the heaviest window panels are only a few pounds and there are super strength fabric type shutters that weigh less than a pound that can be opened from the inside in seconds. Poor consumer actions, although tragic, should stand on their own.
why didn’t the fire fighters break down the door instead of wasting time on windows?
That’s my question, too.
This is truly tragic. I have to wonder why firefighters spent 40 minutes sawing through wooden shutters that were locked from the outside.

I don’t see where one thing has to do with the other.

Time to ban storm shutters and stoves. If just one life can be saved, it’s worth it.
I wonder if they considered using the door?
Remove wrapper from pizza before cooking.
