(Self-driving cars must increase safety at least twofold to make a real dent in the 38,000 lives lost on American roads last year, the U.S. auto-safety chief said as the federal government prepares to release rules for autonomous vehicles next month.

“I’d actually like to throw the gauntlet down,” Mark Rosekind, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said Wednesday at a conference in Novi, Michigan. “We need to start with two times better. We need to set a higher bar if we expect safety to actually be a benefit here.”)

Do I understand the above statement correctly? The government will not approve these vehicles unless they are TWO TIMES SAFER (by the way, how does one even measure that?). So if the Auto industry makes these vehicles 50% safer and allow the savings of thousands of lives, they won’t approve them because they are not safer enough? They’ll just allow those 38,000 to keep in dying? What will they say to the families of the thousands who died who did not need to if 50% safer cars were actually allowed be built. Not safe enough? The above statements just go to confirm the idiocy of your typical government regulator. “Yeah, your cars are safer, but they’re not safer enough, so we won’t allow you to build them and cause thousands of people to continue dying who didn’t need to.” How do these people sleep at night? What frickin morons!

I agree Dave. Morons every one of them.

By the way, the 38,000 figure sticks in my mind. The administration released figures a few days ago that only 38,000 jobs were created in May and 500,000 more left the job force after giving up looking. They continue to cook the employment books and say the rate is 4.7% now and somehow that is good. Double morons!
