“Right now, U.S. insurers are hampered in serving millions of people around the world because of discriminatory treatment by foreign governments.

In contrast, the U.S. insurance market is open to insurers from all countries…”

Ironically, the author stumbles on exactly why so many Americans are starting to oppose these enormous and poorly thought out trade deals. There’s a pattern of the U.S. and its companies getting taking advantage of by foreign governments and entities who don’t play by the rules. For example, we see this with China both with intellectual property and with currency manipulation. Open-ended “free” trade agreements simply do not benefit average Americans. More often than not, the tradeoff has been slightly cheaper goods and services in exchange of the loss of middle class jobs.

The author’s claim that we need more open-ended trade deals to address the imbalance in the opportunity in the insurance market is like telling an overweight man that the solution to his problem is a bigger belt.

Not sure Globalization is the way to go given the very unstable world we live in. What may look like an exciting opportunity may just blow up in our faces. Example: Liberty Mutual thought it was a good idea to make investments in Venezuela. What a joke that turned out to be with commensurate losses.

People around the world are concerned about what will be done with their private data once it is on a server in the US. It being convenient and efficient to US insurers is not our concern or problem.

The biggest server in the world is the NSA. They know everything about everybody who is on the internet.
