Recent floods caused more than $14 million in damages in a southwest Arkansas county, according to a report by county officials and the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.
Around half of the land in Little River County was flooded by nearby bodies of water, including the Red River, following severe weather in May and June, said the county’s emergency coordinator, Don Hale Jr. The report shows that more than 20 county roads were closed due to flooding, the Texarkana Gazette reported.
The county has around 361,600 acres of land with around 1,000 miles of county roads. Hale said that road damage estimates aren’t complete and aren’t included in the total amount of flood damage.
Damages in the county include 5,000 acres in soybeans that were planted and lost and 7,000 acres of lost corn, which had been valued at around $4 million. An estimated 30,000 acres of pasture land was damaged with a value of $2.1 million.
A Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman recommends that residents contact their insurance companies and then FEMA to determine if they have uninsured or underinsured losses. He said FEMA will issue “mini-grants” that would help fund repairs, from replacing eyeglasses to installing dry wall.
In Howard County, a disaster recovery center has opened to help residents whose homes were affected by the storms.
Representatives from the state Department of Emergency Management, FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration and other agencies will be at the center to provide information about disaster-assistance programs and help residents apply for aid.
